Teaching

I have designed and taught two courses in the past years at Queens College, CUNY:

1. Introduction to Philosophy (Fall 2022)

Description: This course seeks to address some central questions in the Western philosophical tradition and invites students to think critically and develop their reasoning skills. It will help students learn to reflect on how to make sense of the world, how to argue better, and how to present and support their views. The readings are selected to provide a basis for understanding ongoing debates in philosophy. As this is an introduction, it is more about inviting students to think philosophically than it is about coverage or memorization of facts. The course will introduce students to problems in various subfields of philosophy, such as metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, political philosophy, the philosophy of science, and the philosophy of technology and artificial intelligence.

2. Philosophy and The Challenge of The Future: Artificial Intelligence (Fall 2023, Spring 2024, Fall 2024, Spring 2025)

Description: The course revolves around the theoretical and technical challenges associated with creating artificial intelligence (AI) systems that are safe to deploy and aligned with human values. This includes a series of questions that arise at the intersection of philosophy and AI, especially with respect to how highly capable AI could shape the future of humanity. We will specifically study the conceptual framework that is relevant to AI risk with questions about intelligence and the pursuit of goals as well as the ethics of creating powerful AI and the moral responsibility towards our collective future. We will examine the recent developments of Large Language Models (LLMs) and consider possible future scenarios for the near-term and the long-term, focusing on the possibility and likelihood of an intelligence explosion (Singularity), and the potential of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Superintelligence.
